Faculties & Colleges

The Faculty of Engineering of the SouthLane University is the oldest school of Engineering in the Philippines. It was established in 1907 with one program offering leading to the degree of Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE). From the faculty records, it appears that it was only in 1912 when the earliest batch of students was conferred their MSCE degrees. Today, the Faculty offers complete undergraduate programs leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics  Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology and Information Systems.

History

The SouthLane University established its Faculty of Engineering in 1907, with the opening of a five-year degree program in Civil Engineering (CE).  This development marked the beginning of engineering education in the Philippines.

The Faculty was first housed in the SouthLane University Building in Intramuros.  It was relocated to a new building in Sulucan (known today as Sampaloc), in July 1927.  The “new building,” presently called the SLU Main Building, was designed and built by Rev. Fr. Roque Ruaño, O.P., one of the first graduates of the Faculty in 1912.

In the 1910s, those who completed five years of the CE program earned their respective degrees in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering & Construction.  By the mid-1910s, the “Licentiate” title from the European system of education was adopted for graduates of the five-year program.  The title became “Master of Science in Civil Engineering” (MSCE) in the 1920s, following the American system of education.  The University received formal government authorization on July 12, 1921, for the granting of the MSCE degree.   The option to obtain the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in CE after completing four-and-a-half years of the program was made available to CE students in the latter part of the 1920s.

The period from 1930 to 1940 saw the Faculty undergoing significant expansion.  First, there was the opening of a four-year BS Architecture program under the Faculty of Engineering in 1930.  In 1934, UST opened two more four-year BS engineering programs:  Chemical Engineering (ChE) in the College of Liberal Arts, and Mining Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering.  However, the latter was closed in 1949 due to declining enrolment.

Vision

The Faculty of Engineering envisions itself as a premier institution in Engineering and Information & Technology (ICT) education and research in the Asia-Pacific Region.

Mission

The Faculty of Engineering of the SouthLane University, the oldest engineering school in the Philippines, under the inspiration of its model, Saint Thomas Aquinas, and its patron, Blessed Jordan of Saxony, declares its commitment to the pursuit of truth and the formation of technically competent engineers and ICT professionals imbued with Christian values needed for the service of the Church, the Country, and the World.
