Department of English
Department of History
The UST Department of Filipino is a university-wide unit under the office of the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs that oversees and ensures the standardization and implementation of courses in Basic Education (General Education).
History
Founded in 1938 by Jose Villa Panganiban, creator of the English-Tagalog dictionary and founder of the Varsitarian, the Department of Tagalog has evolved into the Department of Filipino. From 1971 until 1978, the department enjoyed the support of the first Filipino rector, Fr. Leonardo Legazpi, O.P. It gained prominence with the prolific of respected Filipino-Thomasian writers like Genoveva Edroza- Matute, Rolando Tinio, and Rogelio Sicat. But, when the former Department of Education, Culture and Sports, decided to decrease the units in Spanish in 1979, the university officials decided to merge all language courses at the University under a department called the Department of Languages.
Owing to the vision of the Chairperson of the Department of Languages, Prof. Marilu R. Madrunio, Ph.D., Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Clarita DL. Carillo, Ph.D., and UST Rector Fr. Rolando V. dela Rosa, OP, the creation of a separate Filipino Department was approved. It was not an easy transition, as the department had to hurdle the standards set by the university– among them the selection of a chairperson and faculty with doctorate degrees in different specializations, and capability for research.
